| Severe depression may silently break a seemingly healthy woman's heart. Doctors have long known that depression is common after a heart attack or stroke, and worsens those people's outcomes.

Depression is Hard on the Heart My heart was perfectly fine til the adoption of our baby fell through after 18 months. Unfortunately, we had a pastor who told me not to let anyone in our church see me cry (John and I were ministers in Kansas at the time), so I didn't let myself cry in front of anyone and held my emotions in. I had my first heart attack a year later. I've always said my heart issues were from a broken heart. We couldn't have any of our own kids, and this was the only baby we would ever have. We brought him home from the hospital. He was my heart..slept in my arms...I adored him.... | |

| If you don't mind me asking, why did it fall through. If you don't want to answer it's okay. | |

| No, that's okay Mike. We had a lady leave our church, and in retaliation, she filed a false report of child abuse, which we were cleared of immediately. But, because this was an interstate adoption, the red tape became a mess. We let Arizona know we were cleared, but they said it was up to Kansas to let them know. Kansas said if Arizona wanted to know we were cleared, they could call them. It was ridiculous that they would do this to an innocent baby. We paid for a private home study which we passed with flying colors, had so many references from professionals because the baby had cerebral palsy and I had contacted early intervention specialists so he would be ahead of the curve. He weighed 1 lb. 6 oz. when he was born. His mom was beaten by the baby's dad so severely they had to abort him, but he had other ideas. He was a fighter. He was only 23 weeks gestation and he pulled through! Dad's rights were severed and Mom turned him over to us, so we aren't sure exactly how we lost him...it was all so horrible. I have never gone through anything like that in my life..yet I learned so much. I learned I'm stronger than I ever thought I was. I learned peace that passes understanding. Everytime I thought I couldn't go on, someone would call me and ask me to lunch, or someone would show up at my house. I learned how to pray. So...it was an awful time, but a learning time. Unfortunately, my hubby never got past the anger part of the grief and that continues to be an issue. We can't talk about Christopher. I was able to forgive the people involved because I know for a fact that they NEVER meant for us to lose him. They just thought we would have some hassles for a time and it would pass. So...that's what happened. He eventually was adopted and I know the family must love him so much. I wish I could see him, but I have no clue as to how. He just turned 18 last year. Oh my..the tears still come. I can't look at any pictures of him. Okay..I'm gonna stop cuz I'm crying..but the memories of him are so precious. He was my joy..my heart..my life. Thanks for asking... | |

| Michelle that's so heart-wrenching. I hope that you've been able to see past this, you're a very strong woman and even though we don't know each other, I hope that changes | |

| Thank you. I actually have. I've grown from it so much. Because of this, and also the death of one of our foster sons who also had cerebral palsy, I'm able to share with other Moms who have lost children and actually say, "I know". Without that experience, I couldn't even begin to understand their pain and share with them the things that helped me get through it...and I DID get through it. Unfortunately, I just got bad advice from the minister I had at the time so I didn't grieve like I should have then, so my heart suffered. I've learned since then. When you're sad...you can't avoid the pain. You can't build a house and live there, but you also can't run away from the feelings. You have to recognize what you're feeling. If you need to camp there for a little while..that's okay. It's part of the process. This goes for whatever you're dealing with. Pretending it's not happening is counter productive. God gave us feelings for a reason and He gave us tears for a reason. When I get a bad report from the doc, or bad news about a family member...I let myself feel the feelings I need to feel. By doing that..they don't last as long as they would have before. I'm able to look them straight in the eye...deal with the reality of it..and then move forward. I may move back and forth for a bit..but I deal with them. It doesn't mean I'm weak because I cry. It means I'm human. I was raised by a wonderful man, but he thought any tears were a sign of weakness. Well...he raised a blubberface...lol. I even cry when I get mad and that makes me madder! So...this experience taught me a lot. I wish it never had happened and I could have raised my precious little man...but..God loves him even more than I do and I know that He put him in a good home. Thanks for caring! | |
