Iron Triangle
A Chinook wind blew in, hot and heavy,
Thrumming like war drums into the iron triangle.
The Black Lions fierce name belied the fresh young faces,
As the brass pushed for a run through the jungle – body counts.
Get your fat ass out of your Huey, general, and do it yourself!
There is danger in the shadows, and death in the light.
Alpha is gone, Delta cut to shit, as the VC melt away.
Madison’s youth riot, as fifty thousand dollars a week in teargas inflames the rage
But DOW and Johnson locked step in cadence with the billy clubs.
And the ghosts of the dead Americans pulled at the feet of the VC,
Haunting the gray heads of the faded Lions,
Who still ask, “What was served?”
This deep and unhealing wound,
Of those who never heard, “welcome home!”
